BLOOD ON THE SNOW
by Graydon A Tunstall

The Carpathian winter campaign of 1915, described by some as the “Stalingrad of the First World War”, drove the million-man armies of Austria-Hungary and Russia to the brink of annihilation. Habsburg forces fought to rescue 130,000 Austro-Hungarian troops trapped by the Russians in Fortress Przemysl, but the campaign produced six times as many casualties as the number besieged. It remains one of the least understood and most devastating chapters of the war. Tunstall shows that the roots of the Habsburg collapse in Russia in 1916 lay squarely in the winter campaign of 1915.

UNDER FIRE IN THE DARDANELLES
by Camilla Cecil and Kira Charatan

Edward Cadogan kept a record of his war in words and photographs. His baptism by fire in Gallipoli had a profound effect on him but, as the situation deteriorated and casualties mounted, he became highly critical of the plan and the leadership. His front line experiences are balanced by his contact with senior commanders. Wounded and clearly in poor health he was fortunate to survive. After the ignominious withdrawal, Cadogan soldiered on in Egypt and Palestine. This compilation is not only superb military history but a unique piece of social commentary.

KUT 1916: COURAGE AND FAILURE IN IRAQ
by Colonel Patrick Crowley

The siege of Kut is a story of blunders, sacrifice, imprisonment and escape. The allied campaign in Mesopotamia began in 1914 as a relatively simple operation to secure the oilfields in the Shatt-al-Arab Delta and Basra area. Initially it was a great success, but as the army pressed towards Baghdad its poor logistic support, training, equipment and command left it isolated and besieged by the Turks. By 1916 the army had not been relieved, and on 29 April 1916, the British Army suffered one of the worst defeats in its military history. Major-General Sir Charles Townshend surrendered his allied force to the Turks in the Mesopotamian (now Iraqi) town of Kut-al-Amara.

GALLIPOLI THEN AND NOW
by Steve Newman

Virtually unheard of prior to 1915, Gallipoli, the Turkish peninsula bordering the Dardanelles, conjures up visions which surpass the horrors of the trench warfare on the Western Front. Valued for its command of the seaway, Gallipoli was the scene of an horrific campaign between April 1915 and January 1916 in which more than 100,000 men lost their lives. For the Allies it was a battle fought in vain as the invasion forces were withdrawn for no gain. For the Turks it was a marvellous victory. With more than 450 photographs of major battle sites, cemeteries and other major features, the book provides a unique link between the past and the present.

WHITE EAGLE, RED STAR
by Norman Davies

The Polish-Soviet War of 1919-20 was not the final episode in the wars of intervention, but an independent enterprise on the Polish side with minimal support from the Entente Powers. As far as Soviet history is concerned the war with Poland represents the first occasion when the Red Army set out to revolutionise the whole of Europe. For the Poles, it was an occasion when they finally justified their claim to independence. White Eagle, Red Star gives a full account of the war, with its dramatic climax in August 1920 when the Red Army was crushed by the devastating Polish attack, known as the 'miracle on the Vistula'.

OPERATION KRONSTADT
by Harry Ferguson

Written by a former MI6 officer, Operation Kronstadt uncovers a truly dramatic story from the Russian Revolution involving a daring mission against the best defended naval target in Russia. By May 1919, when the power struggle between former Tsarists and Bolsheviks hung in the balance, the only British agent in Russia was in mortal danger. Mansfield Cumming, the first ‘C’, sent a young naval officer into the jaws of death to rescue him. This is the remarkable story of the spy, Paul Dukes, and of Gus Agar, whose extraordinary escapade won him the Victoria Cross.

INTERVENTION IN RUSSIA 1918-1920
by Miles Hudson

The end of the Great War did not bring peace to Russia - civil war developed between the Bolsheviks and the 'White Russians' who represented the old Czarist order. A 'coalition' of 16 nations including Britain, America and France became involved on numerous fronts in support of the Whites. The result was defeat and failure for the coalition forces. This little known and ill-fated enterprise was surprisingly costly in political and military terms, indeed the intervention lead to precisely the opposite result to that intended.

THE INSURRECTION IN MESOPOTAMIA 1920
by Lt. Gen. Sir Aylmer L Haldane

Originally published in 1922, this is the story of the revolt of the shi'ite muslims in Iraq during the summer and autumn of 1920. The author was both the military and civil head of British forces in Iraq and Persia. When the revolt broke out in May at Tel Afar, he was faced with 130,000 armed men against a very small British and Indian Army force. There are chapters on the relief operations at Raumaithah, Kufah, and Samawah and other combat operations at Hellah and Dwaniyah. Of particular importance is the background of the revolt, factors which still impact Iraq today.

THE ETHIOPIAN PATRIOTS
by Andrew Hilton

On 3rd October, 1935 an Italian army, fully mechanised and over 125,000 strong, invaded Ethiopia on the orders of Mussolini. The Ethiopian army was swiftly crushed and the Emperor Haile Selassie was forced into exile. But the will of the Ethiopian people was not defeated. Here, in their own words, the surviving Patriots tell their own story of guerilla warfare waged for six years to victory. This is the record of a struggle which was germane to the outcome of the Second World War. With a foreword by the late, great journalist W. F. 'Bill' Deedes

FRANCISCO FRANCO'S MOROCCAN WAR DIARY 1920-1922
by Translator Paul Southern

In 1920 Major Francisco Franco Bahamonde was appointed second-in-command of the newly established 'Legion de Extranjeros' (the Spanish Foreign Legion). In the Legion's garrison town of Ceuta he began to compile a record of the battalion which he was to command in Spain's Moroccan Protectorate. This record covers the two-year period from October 1920 to May 1922 and this volume is a critical analysis and translation of Bahamonde's account. It also includes interesting biographical and topographical notes.
