OSPREY AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES 58: SLOVAKIAN AND BULGARIAN ACES OF WORLD WAR 2
by Jiri Rajlich and Illustrator John Weal

In 1939 Slovakia signed a protection agreement with the German Reich and joined the attack on Poland, where its Avia B-534 equipped fighter squadrons claimed their first kills. In October 1942 the Slovaks were equipped with Bf 109Es and eventually acquired 43 of the Messerschmitt fighters. Although it supported German efforts in Yugoslavia and Greece, Bulgaria did not declare war on Russia. First seeing action in August 1943, Bulgarian fighter pilots used their Bf 109Gs to good effect. The book includes 10 colour plates illustrating 39 different aircraft.

OSPREY COMBAT AIRCRAFT 24: CONFLICT IN THE BALKANS 1991-2000
by Tim Ripley

Illustrating the scale and significance of the deployment of air power in the Balkans, this book details the activities of NATO and UN aircraft as well as pilots of the former Yugoslavia. From attacks by B-2 stealth bombers to air-to-air combat, and from moving ground troops by helicopter to 'food-bombing' for refugees, air power played a vital role in 'Europe's Vietnam. Also, since the conflict, debate has yielded little agreement as to the degree of damage which was inflicted on the Yugoslav 3rd Army in Kosovo.

OSPREY AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES 112: FOKKER D.XXI ACES OF WORLD WAR 2
by Kari Stenman and Peter de Jong

Dutch D.XXIs saw less than a week of action following the German invasion on 10 May 1940. Many of the country’s 28 fighters were destroyed on the ground, however, those that survived the initial onslaught inflicted losses on the Luftwaffe. However, the D.XXI had found everlasting fame in Finland during the Winter War of 1939-40. The fighter, operating in primitive conditions and against vastly superior numbers, Finnish D.XXIs racking up an incredible score against the Red Air Force. After spending a year providing home defence during the early stages of the Continuation War in 1941, all surviving Finnish Fokker D.XXIs were relegated to the reconnaissance role, which they performed through to the end of hostilities.

OSPREY AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES 91: BREWSTER F2A BUFFALO ACES OF WORLD WAR 2
by Kari Stenman and Andrew Thomas

Originally built for the US Navy, the F2A fought in only one major US engagement, the battle of Midway, in which F2A pilots shot down a number of Japanese fighters. Soon replaced by the navy, the F2A was exported to Britain, where it was named the Buffalo. Most of these fighters went to the Far East where they were used in the defence of Singapore and Malaya by the RAF and RAAF. It was in the Winter War, however, that the F2A truly found a home. Flying against the invading Russians, 37 Finnish pilots achieved ace status

Finland's premier fighter squadron during World War II, Lentolaivue (Flying Squadron) 24, first saw action during the Winter War of 1939-40, when the Soviets launched a surprise attack on the small Scandinavian country. LLv 24 was once again in the thick of the action following the outbreak of the Continuation War in June 1941, claiming 877 kills. OSPREY COMBAT AIRCRAFT 63: AICHI 99 KANBAKU 'VAL' UNITS, 1937-42
by Osamu Tagaya and Illustrator Jim Laurier

The Aichi Type 99 Carrier Bomber (D3A), code named ‘Val' by Allied intelligence, was the mainstay of the Imperial Japanese Navy's carrier dive-bomber force from 1941 to 1943. It sank more Allied tonnage than any other Axis aircraft during World War II. While the Val's participation in the major carrier battles has been widely covered in other English language sources, details of its operations have received scant attention in English. Colour illustrations and photographs complement the development of dive-bombing methods in the IJN.

OSPREY AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES 44: GLOSTER GLADIATOR ACES
by Andrew Thomas and Illustrated by John Weal

Flying the ultimate British biplane fighter, pilots in China, Finland, East Africa, North Africa, Western Europe, the Mediterranean, Norway and the Middle East all scored the prerequisite five kills to become aces. The first individuals to do so were fighting marauding Japanese fighters and bombers attacking targets in China in 1938. The likes of Sheen, Tuck and Carey feature in this volume, as they were among the many early war aces who cut their teeth in Fighter Command on the Gladiator.

OSPREY COMBAT AIRCRAFT 103: F9F PANTHER UNITS OF THE KOREAN WAR
by Warren Thompson

When the Korean War started in June 1950, the USAF had built up a sizable jet force in the Far East, while the Navy was in the early stages of getting F9F Panthers operational as replacements for its piston-engined F8F Bearcats. Operating from aircraft carriers off the Korean coast, F9Fs helped stop the North Korean invasion within two weeks of the communists crossing the 38th Parallel. The Panthers took the battle all the way to the Yalu River, long before MiG-15s became a threat. The F9F's basic tasking was aerial supremacy and combat air patrols, but they also excelled in bombing and strafing attacks.

OSPREY AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES 71: PFALZ SCOUT ACES OF WORLD WAR I
by Greg Van Wyngarden

Pfalz was the third in the great triumvirate, along with Fokker and Albatros, of German fighter manufacturers in the Great War. When World War I broke out Pfalz initially produced copies of the Morane-Saulnier parasol monoplanes, but with the advent of the famed Fokker Eindeckers with their synchronized machine guns, Pfalz entered the fighter market with the E.I and its successors which were similarly armed. The D III/IIIa was flown in combat by many well-known aces including Werner Voss, Carl Degelow, Erich Löwenhardt, and Fritz von Röth.

OSPREY AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES 77: ALBATROS ACES OF WORLD WAR I PART 2
by Greg Van Wyngarden

From September 1916 until late 1918, Albatros biplanes formed the primary equipment of Germany's fighter forces. Starting with the D I of 1916, these aircraft underwent a continuous programme of development, reaching their zenith in the spring of 1917 when the deadly D III took a heavy toll of Allied aircraft. Nearly every one of the 81 Jagdstaffeln operated one or more types of highly decorated aircraft at some point. The book provides a detailed look at the design and production of the Albatros series and the careers of such aces as Ernst Udet, Max Müller, Karl-Emil Schäfer and Julius Buckler.
