The author, a Polish Officer during the German invasion of his
country
relates his experiences as a member of the Polish Forces in exile
and the Polish underground resistance. After Poland's defeat in
1939, he joined the Resistance, fighting on two fronts - against
the German occupiers and the Russians. He was a witness to the
German extermination of the Jews. At the end of the war he escaped
to the West pursued by the Russians.
Innes Munro was a junior officer in 71st Foot (McLeod's
Highlanders). These letters are from his service in India between
1779 and 1784. He recounts his outward voyage via Madeira and
capeTown, and goes on to recount his impressions of the exotic
scenes and events he witnessed in and around Madras. He took part
in the war against Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore.
