The story of the Long Range Desert Group, the
forerunner of today's elite special forces regiment.
Formed as a commando raiding force in North Africa in
1941, the brainchild of David Stirling of L Detachment, it
went on to fight in Sicily, Italy and NW Europe. It was
disbanded after the war and then reborn as a Territorial
Army unit in 1947. The book traces for the first time, and
critically studies, the largely secret wartime operations.
The experiences of four men of different nationalities
caught up in WWII. Antonio Benetti - an Italian Ski
Commando, Helmut Steiner - a German Tank Driver, Odell
Dobson - an American Air Gunner and George Paine - a
British Paratrooper. Each of them told their stories to
Bruce Lewis who has skilfully managed to preserve the
idiosyncrasies of their contrasting cultures and
backgrounds.
BATTLE
GROUP!
GERMAN KAMPFGRUPPEN ACTION OF WORLD WAR TWO
by James Lucas
A study of the WWII Battle Groups of the Wehrmacht -
the ad-hoc combination of units that were brought together
and sent into action to achieve particular objectives. The
Kampfgruppen displayed the flexible effectiveness of
"combined arms" warfare. Examples include the paratroop
battle groups in Crete, a 15-week rearguard action on the
Eastern Front, Normandy 1944, and action as
bicycle-mounted tank killers in the dying days of the
Reich.
Confederate General, Robert E. Lee's Orders, reports,
and letters written in his flowing but precise style. This
is effectively Lee's record of his battles and campaigns
in the War between the States. It is a monumental
contribution to the literature of the American Civil War.
