VOLUME X: THE NEWFOUNDLANDERS IN THE GREAT WAR, 1916-1918

As in many other parts of the British Empire, Newfoundlanders greeted the coming of the Great War with great euphoria. Hastening to enlist for the "Great Adventure", they were to to take part in some of the war's most historic battles. They were at the first day of the Battle of the Somme on July 1st, 1916 - the most infamous day in British military history, at Arras in April, 1917 &, later, at Cambrai. By the end of the war 4,253 Newfoundlanders had served on the Western Front - & 1,200 had made the ultimate sacrifice
