A Russian language (Cyrillic text) volume describing the Battle
of Navarino which was fought on 20 October, 1827, during the Greek
War of Independence in Navarino Bay in the Ionian Sea. An Ottoman
and Egyptian armada was destroyed by a combined British, French
and Russian naval force. It is notable for being the last major
naval battle in history fought entirely with sailing ships. The
Allied ships were better armed than their opponents, and their
crews were better trained, contributing to a complete victory. A
loose insert provides English translations by Craig Martelle, of
the picture captions and tables.

On September 26,
1918, more than one million American soldiers prepared to assault
the German-held Meuse-Argonne region of France. Their commander,
General John J. Pershing, said that in thirty-six hours the
doughboys would crack the German defenses and open the road to
Berlin. Six weeks of savage fighting later, the battle finally
ended with the signing of the armistice. The battle had cost more
than 120,000 American casualties, including 26,000 dead, the
bloodiest battle the nation had ever seen.

The Battle of Verdun lasted ten months. It was a battle in which
at least 700,000 men fell, along a front of fifteen miles. The
battle's aim was less to defeat the enemy than bleed him to death
and the battleground even now resembles a haunted wilderness. This
book is a profoundly moving, sympathetic study of the men who
fought there, and shows that Verdun is a key to understanding the
First World War. Continuously in print for over thirty years, this
unabridged edition contains a new preface and additional
photographs.
The definitive story of one of the most momentous events in
modern US history - the nation's first "hot war" with Communist
adversaries. This 'limited', non declared war resulted in more
than 52,000 American dead. The book covers every aspect of the
war, both the spectacular military actions and its political
origins, its agonizing peace negotiations, and its consequences,
many of which reverberate to this day.
