The Leibstandarte started out as Hitler’s personal bodyguard but
even before the war broke out it had expanded to take on more and
more military duties. It participated in the occupation of the
Sudetenland and Czechoslovakia and the annexation of Austria.
Eventually it evolved into the 1. SS-Panzer-Division
“Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler” under its long-time commander,
Sepp Dietrich. The author of this new book has located and
interviewed surviving members including SS-Brigadeführer und
Generalmajor der Waffen-SS Wilhelm Mohnke. The book includes
hundreds of photographs of military personalities and the forces
in the field with their weapons and equipment plus 165 images of
award documents

Taken prisoner in
Java, Terence Kelly's captivity was full of barbaric cruelty and
suffering, particularly on the journey to Japan packed into a
filthy cargo ship under atrocious conditions. He was a slave
labourer in the Hitachi shipyards where he got to know the
Japanese and learn their language. Hiroshima was possibly the best
POW camp with interaction between POWs and captors. The book
offers a rare insight into the Japanese character, as unthinkable
defeat became a reality. Kelly's account of the A-Bomb attack and
the chaos that followed it is fascinating and rare.
This biography of John Jervis, who became Admiral Lord St Vincent,
throws an oblique light on Nelson's personality. St Vincent
fundamentally influenced the younger man's career despite the two
men being diametrically different characters. It was St Vincent's
strategy and preparation which positioned Nelson to win his three
famous victories. St Vincent made vital contributions not only to
the defeat of Napoleon but to the well-being of the Royal Navy.
Before his reforms as First Lord of the Admiralty the Navy had
been severely weakened by corruption, nepotism, and the appalling
conditions under which the seamen lived.
