| UNDER THE SHADOW: LETTERS OF LOVE AND WAR 1911-1917 by Brid Hetherington Typical of thousands of young men at the time, Hugh Mann a student of Divinity in Glasgow fell in love with Jessie, a first year Arts student at the University of Glasgow. When Jessie became pregnant the full force of Scottish middle class prejudices was brought to bear on them. The letters are testimony to a different age. On 17 October 1914, he enlisted for Lochiel's Camerons, that same day he married Jessie. He survives Loos and Arras but died from injuries received at Passchendaele in October 1917. | THE FIFTH DIVISION IN THE GREAT WAR by Brig.Gen. A. H. Hussey CB, CMG and Maj. D S Inman The Fifth was a pre-war regular division which landed in France in August 1914 as part of the original BEF.
