Military History - Between the World Wars - General Section
Between the World Wars - General Section
Despite being thought of as a period  bereft of major conflicts, there were in fact many outbreaks of hostilities. Amongst these were the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, the Sino-Japanese War &, of course, the Spanish Civil War - a testing ground for Germany's newly developed weapons & tactics, including strategic bombing against civilians

THE BATTLE FOR SPAIN
by Anthony Beevor

The Spanish civil war tore the country apart between 1936 and 1939. It attracted liberals and socialists from across the world to support the cause against Franco, and was one of the most hard-fought and bitterest conflicts of the 20th century. It was a war of atrocities and political genocide, and a military testing ground for the Russians, Italians and Germans, whose Condor Legion so notoriously destroyed Guernica. Beevor draws on masses of newly-discovered material from the Spanish, Russian and German archives, succeeding in unravelling the complex political and regional forces that played such an important part in the origins of the war.

ONLY FOR THREE MONTHS: THE BASQUE REFUGEE CHILDREN IN EXILE
by Adrian Bell

In 1937 4,000 Spanish children, The ‘Basque children’, as they came to be known, arrived in England having been evacuated from the Civil War raging in Spain. This was just one month after the bombing of Guernica and the British Government gave reluctant permission for the children to come to England – with the stipulation that no public finance would ever be made available to support them here. None ever was. It was everyone’s expectation that their stay in England would be brief and, although most of them were to be reunited with their families after the end of the Civil War, some 450 did not go back. Many of them had nothing and nobody to return to.
