A SECRET WAR: AMERICANS IN CHINA 1944-1945

THE THIRD MAN

Harold Adrian Russell (Kim) Philby was a senior officer in the British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) for ten years, but was actually an agent of the Soviet KGB. He was recruited whilst still a student at Cambridge, along with fellow traitors - Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess and Anthony Blunt. Since the defection of Burgess and Donald MacLean in 1951 MI5, the British Security Service, had been searching for the mysterious 'Third Man'. In 1963 testimony from a Soviet defector clinched the case against Philby, and a fellow SIS officer went to Beirut to persuade him to confess. Instead, Philby boarded a Soviet freighter and fled to Moscow.
